Queen ants can fly. What?! You’ve got to be kidding! A queen can’t fly! That’s right, a queen ant does have wings (plural), and she can use them if she ever feels like it. It is certainly not something that queens do often, though. If a queen wants to fly, she will typically take off from the ground and slowly float up into the air. This type of ant reproduces parthenogenetically (without mating) and this particular relies on their survival mechanism.

Queen ants are too big and heavy, so even if they could flap their wings hard enough (which they can’t), it would take an immense amount of energy to do so.
