My least favorite part of living in New York City is the unspoken, ever-present fear that I will run into a cockroach. Cockroaches are perhaps the only thing that truly scare me (- aside from the occasional, somewhat irrational fear of my elevator plummeting to its death). But because it was coming from behind a piece of furniture that sits right on top of my apartment’s radiator (aka the warmest place in our home), and because said piece of furniture has tall legs that literally lift it up off the ground by a few inches (i.e., creating prime real estate for an unwanted guest), it was all but confirmed: We had an unexpected visitor.

I sat paralyzed with fear as every bone in my body told me to get up and check out what was going on — except for one bone: My own sad little spine, which told me nothing because I have scoliosis and therefore can’t feel anything below my neck (just kidding).

After about 10 minutes or so (and after receiving no help from my husband who simply muttered, “I don’t know what to tell you; we’re not getting rid of our bookshelf,”) I decided to take matters into my own hands (literally) and investigate myself.
