Chinese Eating Cockroaches

If you’ve been reading the news lately, chances are pretty slim you haven’t come across some of the odd culinary habits of Chinese peoples. Eating things that horrify the rest of the world is a pretty established past time in China, and we’re going to dive right into it with a look at Chinese eating cockroaches. If you go out at night to the park and see a Chinese guy eating cockroaches, don’t laugh! Actually, do laugh because they are disgusting and not good for anyone. But know there is a community of people from China that eats them and other animals. Come read my blog post about this scary, yet fascinating practice. A growing practice in the culturally diverse Chinese nation is to eat cockroaches. While it is a bit unusual according to Westerners, roach eating has actually been a Chinese practice for thousands of years. However, with the most recent interest in cockroach cuisine, many Westerners are looking at it as an exotic way to eat bugs. Are these critters dangerous or nutritious? There’s a rather interesting and yet a disgusting Chinese eating custom called Jiyee-jook, in which participants eat live cockroaches. The cockroaches are said to have medicinal properties, but what was more fascinating was the way they were prepared and eaten. So I did some research and here are the highlights of this tradition.

Chinese Eating Cockroaches

Introduction

As a Chinese person, I have witnessed this phenomenon for years: my fellow countrymen and women are eating cockroaches. In fact, the word “cockroach” is the same as “water chestnut” in Chinese language (蟑螂).

Eating insects is an old Chinese habit.

Eating insects is an old Chinese habit. In China, eating insects is a custom, a tradition and even considered a speciality or delicacy by some people. Many restaurants serve fried crickets with vegetables as snacks to customers who want something more than just the usual popcorn or peanuts while they are watching television.

Eating insects brings no benefit to human body.

Insects are unhealthy for human consumption. The insect’s body contains toxins and toxins can cause harm to the body. In addition, insects are not good sources of vitamins – they don’t contain enough protein or essential fatty acids, which means that the food you consume from it won’t have any nutritional benefits for you.

Cockroaches produce more eggs than any other insect.

Cockroaches are incredibly prolific. Each female cockroach can produce up to 50 eggs per week, and they have the ability to lay up to 200 eggs in a lifetime. They can also lay as many as 1000 eggs during their lifetimes, which means that you could soon be looking at a whole lot of cockroaches if you’re not careful!

What’s more? Cockroaches can spread disease, including salmonella and typhus fever. Just by being around them, you’ll be exposed to bacteria yourself—but even if you don’t touch them directly or eat something they’ve eaten (and then later touched), they’re still capable of spreading germs through their feces and vomit.

Cockroaches reproduce faster than any other insect.

Cockroaches reproduce faster than any other insect.

Cockroaches can lay up to 30 eggs a week, and they can mate in just a few hours. Their reproductive process doesn’t require a male or female of their own species; instead, they can lay eggs without mating and even without a male or female at all. This makes them extremely successful at spreading throughout the world despite many attempts by humans to exterminate them.

Cockroaches eat everything, even the most disgusting substances.

Cockroaches are omnivores and will eat anything. They have been known to consume dead cockroaches, their own faeces and even their own eggs.

In some cases, it’s possible for a female cockroach to be pregnant while she is still in her egg case (known as an ootheca). If this happens and the female gives birth while still inside her egg sac then there’s a risk that she could eat one of her offspring because it’s so small compared to her body size. The chances of this happening are slim but it’s still worth mentioning!

A cockroach can live up to a week with its head cut off.

Cockroaches are not insects, though they do share a common ancestor with them. They’re also not spiders or ticks, lice or fleas or bedbugs, and they’re definitely not termites. In fact, the only thing cockroaches have in common with insects is that their bodies are divided into three parts: head; thorax (which holds the wings and legs); abdomen (which contains the organs). The main difference between these two groups is that insects have only one pair of antennae while cockroaches have two pairs.

Cockroaches range in size from 1/8 inch to more than 2 inches long. American cockroach males are larger than females by as much as 50 percent when fully grown (1 1/2 inches vs 1 inch), but both sexes look similar: brownish red on top with yellowish-white undersides when young; dark brown with reddish markings later in life.

Cockroaches can hold their breath for 40 minutes underwater.

While cockroaches have been known to thrive on both land and in water, it’s their ability to survive underwater that has the most interesting implications for them.

Cockroaches have a respiratory system that allows them to breathe through their abdomen. However, they can also breathe through their anus (which is why you should always wear a mask when handling one). This latter method of breathing is called spiracle respiration and allows cockroaches to hold their breath for up to 40 minutes at a time!

In fact, cockroaches can survive in a vacuum because they are able to breathe without air. They can also live without water longer than almost any other animal since they only need very small amounts of moisture in order to survive. If your house were ever caught up in space debris or nuclear fallout then these resilient little guys would be there with you – ready for action!

Everybody should stop eating cockroaches.

We urge you to stop eating cockroaches. They’re not good for your health, they’re not good for the environment, and they’re not good for the economy or world at large. Cockroaches are an important part of our ecosystem that we should be celebrating instead of eating them up like it’s their last supper (which it is).

If you feel that you cannot give up cockroach-eating, consider these alternatives:

  • Try eating insects that are less widely considered to be disgusting (such as crickets).
  • Eat something else entirely (like a sandwich made out of bread).

Conclusion

It is a matter of fact that cockroaches are one of the oldest insects in the world. Additionally, they also produce more eggs than any other insect and can live up to a week with its head cut off. Eating cockroaches brings no benefit to human body. Everyone should stop eating cockroaches for their own health and safety.
