Dorylus Ants

Ranging in size from 3 mm. to 8 mm. the Dorylus genus of ants is characterised by a distinct tooth-like projection called a “dentate girdle” at the hind margin of the thorax. This projection sits at the corner of the rear of the thorax and helps to lock together the front and rear body-parts of an ant once it has captured its prey. Only members of the Dorylus genus have a dentate girdle, allowing taxonomists to separate them from other ants of similar size and appearance. Dorylus ants comprise the largest genus in the subfamily Dolichoderinae. This genus has one of the widest distributions across the world, ranging from Europe to Asia and Africa. One species, Dorylus laevigatus, is native to South America; it was introduced into Hawaii in the 19th century by human activity and has spread across the islands. The worker ants are nocturnal and range in size from 2 to 15 millimeters long; their bodies are very slender and they lack constrictions between their abdominal segments. Dorylus ants are among the biggest and strongest ants in the world. Their massive size has earned them a number of names, including velvety tree ant, siafu ant,oudi ant and marching ant. With a weight up 10x more than other species, they are fast conquerors of other insects. Through their unique natural behavior, they manage to dig tunnels through hard soil faster than in any other species. Four species of the Myrmicinae subfamily Ponerinae tribe (Aenictinus, Aenictus, Dorylus and Paratapinopsis) are characterised by a fenestrate female postpetiole. The myrmicine Pachycondyla shows a partly reduced gaster, but lacks a reduced postpetiole.
