Fleas are difficult, if not impossible to eradicate in many cases. Most people see a flea problem, and want them gone right away, but unfortunately they usually come back within days or weeks. The short of it is that fleas are surprisingly resilient when you think about how delicate a creature can be. But there are things you can do to slow down their ability to lay eggs and have a resting place for them outside your home. And yes, your pets do play a huge role in all this, so pay close attention and be sure to follow my recommendations! There are many questions about fleas being asked online these days. Questions like “Do fleas have eyes?” and “How long do fleas live without food?” are among some of the most common.
You go to your local pet store, and buy a flea collar for your dog as you’ve heard in the news that there is currently an outbreak. You get home and your dog has a collar on — nothing happened for two weeks. Disappointed and frustrated, you abandon the flea collar without another thought. Well, this is what happens when you don’t understand how long can fleas survive without a host. How long can fleas live without a host? If you’ve tried to get rid of fleas on your dog or cat in the past, you may have even asked yourself this question. I’m here to tell you that there’s an answer and it might surprise you.
The climate-controlled environment of your home is a paradise for fleas. Warm and humid, fleas can find plenty to eat and reproduce rapidly. Just one female flea can lay up to 50 eggs in a life span of 30 days–and it’s safe to say that once your pet (or you) has been exposed to fleas, there are more than likely several more on the way. There are many reasons why controlling fleas can be difficult, but figuring out how long fleas live without a host is not one of them–although they’ll probably be found in the shadows. As if you needed another reason to dislike fleas, let me tell you that researchers have found that fleas can survive up to 200 days without a host. (Although they start to die after only 13 days.)
How Long Can Fleas Survive Without Food
Fleas can survive without a host for up to 2 months.
Fleas have been around for thousands of years, and they’re still one of the most common pests in homes today. Fleas can be found on dogs, cats, rats, squirrels, rabbits, mice and other mammals. Because fleas feed off these hosts for their blood meals and reproduce inside them, it’s important to know how long fleas can survive without a host.
Flea eggs produced by the female flea will eventually fall off the host animal as they hatch into larvae that then go through two molts before they become pupae. The pupae wait until they are disturbed by vibrations in the ground or air before emerging as adults ready to feed on blood from another mammal host.
It takes about 12 days for an egg to hatch into an adult flea after being laid by its mother on its host’s fur or skin surface area. After feeding on blood from its host animal during this time period (about 24 hours), adult fleas begin laying eggs again so that there will be more young ones available when needed later down the road after all current adults die off due to starvation from lack of food supply or because old age finally catches up with them sooner Fleas can survive without hosts for up to two weeks.
Fleas are not too picky when it comes to their food. They are known to feed on anything from human blood to that of other animals, including cats, dogs and rodents.
Fleas can survive for extended periods of time without a host in cold weather conditions. In fact, fleas can remain dormant for up to two years under ideal conditions. The main factor contributing to their longevity is the fact that they do not have a circulatory system and therefore do not need blood flowing through their bodies in order to survive.
Fleas can live a long time without a host—up to one year!
The flea’s main food source is blood, so it needs to find a host to survive. It’s also important to note that fleas don’t have lungs, and they breathe through tiny holes in their bodies called spiracles.
Because of this, fleas can’t survive for very long without finding a host. The average lifespan of a cat flea is between ten days and two months without a host; dog fleas can live up to three months without one.
