Grass fleas vs Dog fleas: The Case of the Itchy Flea. Grass fleas and dog fleas can be confused easily if you don’t examine them closely. So what exactly is the difference between a grass flea and a dog flea? There are tons of differences between these two like, the fact that a grass flea jumps whereas a dog flea crawls because of it’s short legs. The most important difference between these two insects is that grass fleas are from the class of Arachnids and not Insects. Dog fleas, on the other hand, belong to the class of Insects. A flea infestation on your yard can be quite annoying. Even when its not warm, you could still experience an attack of hundreds of these tiny, yet irritating creatures. So what are the solutions for grass fleas and how to kill fleas in yard? It’s easy to get confused… it’s all about the idiom ‘Dog fleas and grass fleas’ … just as dogs and cats both have fleas. Comparable situations in life bring comparable phrases to mind, confusing us with their seeming contradictions. This is what happened to me, when I first encountered the phrase ‘Dog Fleas grass fleas’. I admit that even now, I’m still trying to sort it all out.
Squirt liquid soap directly onto your yard.
Grass fleas are a common problem in lawns, but they’re not always easy to kill. These pests can be found all over the country and feed on grass, making it harder for your lawn to grow properly. Luckily, there’s an easy solution: squirting liquid soap directly onto your yard!
Liquid soap will kill grass fleas safely and effectively without hurting children or pets. It’s also safe for the environment and will not harm your lawn as long as you keep it away from roots when you apply it…which is super easy! All you need is a few drops of detergent mixed with water from your hose or spray bottle (about 10% detergent), then spread evenly over affected areas by spraying it on top of leaves using long sweeps back-and-forth until all visible larvae are gone within about 30 seconds after application (don’t worry if some adults escape). You’ll know if this method worked because there won’t be any more adults around after about two weeks — but keep checking anyway just to make sure none come back later on down the road!
Pick up individual grass fleas with a fine-tipped, disposable paintbrush and squish it between your fingers.
Once you find a flea, pick it up with a fine-tipped paintbrush and squish it between your fingers. Do not use your bare hands to pick up grass fleas. The oils from your skin can spread the fleas to other areas of your lawn or garden.
Sprinkle borax on the yard every day until you get rid of any fleas.
Borax is a white powder that looks like salt. It’s available at grocery stores and hardware stores. While it’s safe for the environment and will not harm pets or people, it will kill fleas. To use borax to get rid of fleas:
- Sprinkle borax on the yard every day until you get rid of any fleas. This may take a few days or weeks, depending on how many fleas are in your yard and how often you sprinkle borax on your lawn during this time period
- Once all of the fleas are gone from your lawn, stop sprinkling borax onto it
Go over the lawn with a fine-edge razor to remove any remaining grass fleas.
- Wear gloves. Grass fleas can cause an allergic reaction and are a health risk to you and your family. These small, reddish-brown insects feed on the sap of grasses, causing the blades to wilt and turn brown. It’s important to wear gloves when working in areas where grass fleas are present, as they may crawl onto your skin.
- Use a fine-edge razor. You can use a mower to remove any debris left behind by the grass flea infestation, but it’s also possible that some eggs will have been laid in your lawn before winter arrived (grass fleas overwinter underground). A fine edge razor will allow you to get right up against the base of each blade of grass so that there are no missed spots where eggs could be hiding out until warm weather returns next year.*
- Be careful not to damage the grass blades while performing this step!
Vacuum up to three times a week.
Vacuum fleas and eggs from your carpet, furniture, and upholstery.
If you have a pet that lives outside or is allowed to roam freely in the yard, give them a good brushing outside to remove fleas before bringing them inside.
Mud baths will kill grass fleas but might leave all their eggs on your lawn.
One method that’s been touted as an effective way to kill grass fleas is a mud bath. However, this method is not recommended because it’s messy and can damage your lawn. Mud baths may also be harmful to the health of pets and children who might come into contact with it, so it’s best avoided if you have these around the house.
Lawn and garden pests are not always easy to kill
Even though grass fleas are not as large or noticeable as other pests, they can be just as difficult to get rid of. Grass fleas look like tiny black dots on the grass and so you may not even know that they are there until you start seeing an infestation.
They lay eggs in the soil, which means that if you don’t kill them all at once, it will be difficult to prevent them from returning again next year. They also move quickly through your yard and like shade so they may appear before you notice them or where they came from!
Grass fleas live off plant juices in your lawns but do not harm humans or animals unless bitten by enough of them at one time (which is rare).
