How To Overcome Fear Of Cockroaches

I’m really scared of cockroaches. I mean, I can deal with most creepy crawly bugs, but roaches are just too much. And the worst thing about it is that most people think it’s weird for me to be afraid of roaches. So I came up with 7 things to do when you’re afraid of cockroaches: Cockroaches were here first. They’re around 350 million years old, while humans only go back 200,000 years. But, thanks to the work of American entrepreneur and inventor Dr. Northrop Grumman, that doesn’t mean we still can’t try and eliminate them from our planet by 2030. Are you afraid of cockroaches? Seriously? More than being alone in the dark, more than spiders, traffic, or needles? I know it, I was there. Hell, I’m still there, with spiders and needles. I think you can get over it if you want to; here’s how. Who thought twice, that a cockroach can put people back. They are nasty, ugly, and have a thousand legs, yet more feet than any other creature on the face of the earth. No wonder most people think they are creepy and scary. But if you look at them from another angle, there are facts that will help you overcome your fear of them. Do you know how you feel when you see a cockroach scuttling across the floor? That thing is disgusting!!! No matter where I see a cockroach, I would always run as fast as I can to get away from it. Is it just me? Or are there some people that really love to have cockroaches in their house? Some even feed it with milk and other treats!

How To Overcome Fear Of Cockroaches

Introduction

If you’re afraid of insects, you’re not alone. Almost one-third of all humans suffer from entomophobia, the fear of bugs and other creepy crawlies. Unfortunately, this phobia can make it difficult to find housing in places where roaches are common (which is pretty much everywhere). But what if I were to tell you that cockroaches are really quite harmless? That they don’t spread diseases to humans? That they probably won’t even bite you? It’s true! Given all these things and more, your best bet for overcoming your fear of cockroaches may be to take a deep breath, squish any remaining bugs underfoot (just kidding! we don’t recommend that!), and read on. We’ll do our best to help you face—and hopefully overcome—your fears.

Learn how to relax by taking some deep breaths.

Learning how to relax is a process that takes some time, but it’s worth the effort. Try practicing in front of a mirror so you can see yourself relaxing your face and neck muscles. Once you’re able to relax these muscles on command, try doing it every time you feel your fear rising. This will help you relax when you are nervous or stressed—and remember, cockroach phobia can be stressful! If that sounds like a good idea but is too hard for right now, don’t worry about it; just keep reading and learning as much as possible so that someday soon you’ll be ready to conquer this fear once and for all!

End your fear of cockroaches by understanding the problem.

The first step to overcoming your fear of cockroaches is understanding the problem. Cockroaches are gross and they make you uncomfortable. Who wants one crawling on them or even thinking about it? They’re also not dangerous. Cockroaches do not carry diseases, nor do they bite or sting people, so they’re technically not even a health hazard!

Cockroaches have been around for over 250 million years and survived five mass extinctions that wiped out all other life forms on earth except for insects. In fact, cockroaches can withstand chemical warfare and nuclear disasters—and that’s why you need to get over your fear of these resilient little guys!

Upon your first realization that the cockroach is close, take a couple of minutes for self-talk.

Upon your first realization that the cockroach is close, take a couple of minutes for self-talk. You may say something like: “I can do this.” or “I can make it easier by doing X”. Or maybe you’ll want to talk about how you are not a cockroach, and how you can help them by doing Y. This gives you some time to assess the situation before reacting—and helps prevent knee-jerk reactions or inappropriate flailing in response to being startled by an insect.

Go slowly and feel your way through your interaction with a cockroach.

  • Don’t rush into it.
  • Don’t be afraid to take your time with the process of overcoming your fear of cockroaches, even if this means taking longer than you’d like or feel comfortable with. It’s important not to put yourself in a situation that you’re not ready for, but it’s also important not to let your fear be a barrier to your success; don’t avoid facing the challenge altogether because of how scary it is! You might need help from others (like friends or family members) in order for them to understand what’s going on with you and how best they can offer support during this process—and remember: there are plenty of ways in which we can help each other out without having any negative consequences whatsoever!

Think about how you can make stepping in front of a cockroach easier.

How can you make it easier to step in front of a cockroach?

You could try imagining that it’s not a cockroach at all, but instead some kind of friendly animal like a kitten or puppy. But what if that doesn’t work and the thought of stepping on one is still too much for your brain to handle?

If so, could you try just stepping over rather than on them? Or even just moving them out from underfoot by sweeping them off the ground with your foot as you walk past?

It might seem silly to think about these kinds of tactics for overcoming fear of cockroaches—but actually, this is exactly what we do when we’re afraid: We look for ways around dealing directly with whatever caused us anxiety in the first place.

Ask yourself if you’re asking too much of yourself.

To overcome your fear of cockroaches, you need to stop comparing yourself to others and start setting realistic expectations for yourself.

You may be asking too much of yourself. Are you trying to do too much too soon? Are you setting unrealistic expectations for yourself? Is it possible that what you’re trying to accomplish is not actually realistic for your level of skill or knowledge at this point in time? If so, maybe it’s time to back down a little bit and give yourself some space instead of pushing ahead with a goal that has no chance of succeeding.

Think about how you’re going to do it when you’re ready.

When you are ready, think about how you are going to do it. Visualize yourself approaching the cockroach and stepping over it. Think about how that will make you feel, and then, when the time is right, go ahead and step on the cockroach!

It’s not easy overcoming fear of cockroaches, but if we all work together we can get through this together. We can make a difference in our own lives and help others overcome their fears as well.

Create a practice plan and follow it consistently until you’ve reached your goal.

  • Create a practice plan and follow it consistently until you’ve reached your goal.
  • Practice makes perfect. Practice makes you stronger, more confident, more focused and efficient; it helps you to relax and to cope with stress better. You’ll find that practicing something small like taking deep breaths can reduce your anxiety about cockroaches without having to think about them too much at first. As time goes on, though, gradually increase the length of time that you spend thinking about them—that is until eventually they become less daunting than they once were!

With some planning and practice, even people who are extremely afraid of cockroaches can be among them without feeling anxiety or panic.

When it comes to overcoming fear of cockroaches, the first thing you need is a plan. One of the most effective ways to overcome fears is exposure therapy: gradually exposing yourself to what you’re afraid of until your anxiety dissipates. Exposure therapy can be very effective at reducing anxiety and fear, but it has its limits when we’re dealing with something like a phobia or panic disorder—there are some things that we just can’t get used to no matter how many times we’re exposed to them.

So if your goal is simply never being afraid of roaches again, then exposure therapy may not be the answer for you—you’ll probably have better luck finding other strategies (like cognitive behavioral therapy) that address non-specific fears more effectively than exposure does on its own. But if your goal instead is just managing your fear and allowing yourself access into situations where there are lots of roaches and other nasty bugs without feeling anxious or panicky? Then exposure could work out well for you!

Conclusion

Overcoming a phobia is no small feat. It takes time, commitment, and a strong sense of self. For most people, it’s not enough to simply understand the phobia or try to rationalize it away. You need to engage with the fear directly by facing it head-on in a controlled environment (i.e., therapy). This will help you to realize that cockroaches aren’t as dangerous as you think they are, or at least that your life isn’t in danger when confronted with one. You can also use cognitive behavioral therapy techniques like thought stopping and mindfulness meditation to reduce anxiety during daily life interactions with roaches—or just keep reading our blog!
