Insecticide For Brinjal

Brinjal, scientifically called as eggplant, is one of the most widely grown vegetables in the world. The scientific name for eggplant is Solanum melongena. When cooked, it tastes heavenly and there are many ways of cooking it. Therefore in India it is known as poor man’s meat. It is rich in Vitamin D and hence good for bones and teeth. A brinjal pesticide is used to protect the crop from attacks of bugs, pests and disease. It also also acts as a fertilizer. Brinjal plant is grown in hot weather condition. The naturally occurring chemicals help a certain crop to grow properly in accordance with its requirement.

Insecticide For Brinjal

Brinjal fruit & shoot borer (LEUCINODES ORBONALIS) is a serious pest for brinjal plant. This fruit and shoot borer only infest on all kinds of egg plants or brinjal and it feed internally damaging the tender shoots and fruits.

Nature of Damage-

Damage to the plant is caused mainly by the larvae, which bores through the terminal part of the mid rib of large leaves and tender shoots to cause “dead hearts”.

Later on it also enters into flower buds and fruits. It plugs the entry hole by its excreta. The infested terminal shoots and fruits ultimately drop out. The pest can cause 70 to 100% damage to the brinjal crops.

Management

The regular pesticides application through sprays may not help in managing the shoot and fruit borer. Highly systemic poisons are generally used to kill the pest which makes the vegetables unsafe to consume.

Spraying pesticides to control Brinjal shoot and fruit borer

In the other hand insect has developed tolerant to the pesticides and making it difficult to manage. If we can understand the life cycle of the Lucinodes insect, an integrated approach may be adapted to manage it effectively.

Life Cycle of LEUCINODES ORBONALIS

Life cycle of the brinjal Shoot and fruit borer

  • Eggs – Creamy white egg.
  • Larva – Pink in color.
  • Pupa- Greyish boat shaped cocoon.
  • Adult- White with a characteristic wing

Integrated Management

  • Avoiding continuous mono cropping of brinjal
  • Removing the infested leaves, shoots and fruits dropped and fruits dropped to stop and kill the living larvae stopping the further development into pupa and adult.
  • Heavy infestations plants may be uprooted and burning it is good.

Ovicidal insecticides may be sprayed to kill the eggs laid on the leaves, shoots and fruits.

LUCINODES ORBANALIS larvae management.

Since the larvae dwells inside the shoots and fruits covering with faecal matter, only highly systemic, broad spectrum translaminar action insecticides may only control.

Carbosulfan [Marshall] 2 mL/L  or Chlorantraniliprole [Coragen] 0.33 mL/L or Flubendamide [Fame] 0.25 mL/L or Quinolphos [Ekalux] 2 mL/L or Profenofos + Cypermethrin [Roket] 2 mL/L + Neem oil 1 % [Econeemplus 1 %] – 1 mL/L spray may kill the egg embryo

Shoot and Fruit borer pupa management

Brinjal Shoot and fruit borer Pupa

Application of neem cake 250 kg/ acre as soil application during basal dose application, spraying Chlorpyrifos 50 % EC [Predator or Tafaban] + Neem oil 1 % [Econeemplus 1 %] 2 mL / litre of water at 15 days intervals on soil may kill LUCINODES ORBANALIS Pupa in the soil and stop their transformation to adult.

Soil application of Cartap hydrochloride 4% granules [CALDAN] Or Carbofuran 3 % [Furadon] 5-10 kg per acre will also help in controlling the pupa as well as LUCINODES larvae.

Shoot and Fruit borer Adult management

              Lucinodes orbanalis adult

LUCINODES ORBANALIS female adults after mating will lay eggs on the brinjal crop’s shoots, flowers and fruits. The eggs hatch out and enter inside and starts feeding. Only fertilised eggs tend to hatch out which are laid with proper copulation. Moths emergence and egg laying happens in very short time and within that short time the mating has to happen. If in this time there is any disruption in copulation, the moths lay only unfertilised eggs which won’t fertilise and larvae never emerge out. One of the way to disrupt the fertilisation is avoiding the mating.

Brinjal fruit and shoot borer traps with lures

Para pheromone traps with female scent mimics to attract male LUCINODES ORBANALIS moths at one place and kill them avoiding mating with females. This reduces the chances of females laying the fertilised eggs.

Insecticide For Brinjal

Brinjal is a vegetable that is used in many Indian dishes. It is also known as aubergine and eggplant. The insecticide for brinjal will kill the insects that try to eat it.

The insecticide for brinjal should be sprayed on the plant leaves and stems, where insects are likely to land.

It should not be sprayed on the fruit of the plant, as this may harm humans if eaten after treatment.

The insecticide for brinjal should not be applied when there are signs of rain or heavy dewfall, as this may wash away some of the product and render it ineffective.

The insecticide for brinjal should not be applied at night, because it may not be dry before morning.
