Insecticide For Clematis

If you’re growing a clematis in your garden, it’s important to treat it with insecticide to control moth larva infestations. There are two types of insecticide that can be used on clematis – one is sprayed during the growing season and the other is sprayed in autumn. Most people that purchase a Clematis already know that they need to use a light, spray on insecticide. However, they don’t always follow through with it.

Insecticide For Clematis

You can find a species or variety of clematis (Clematis spp.) to suit nearly every purpose. Choose from fall-, spring- and summer-blooming varieties, with fragrance or without. Flower shapes include stars or trumpets, and some produce clusters of tiny, delicate flowers. Clematis grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 11, depending on species. Clematis are prone to several insect pests, but natural and cultural methods work on these pests.

Common Invertebrate Pests

  1. Both armored and soft scale insects, thrips, aphids, whiteflies and caterpillars can infest clematis. Aphids, whiteflies, scales and thrips attack plants by inserting their narrow, sucking mouth parts into tender parts of plants to suck out fluids. Caterpillars tend to chew on the leaves, working their way around your clematis plant.

Cultural Requirements

  1. A healthy plant is the best defense against pests and diseases — clematis is no exception. Organically rich, well-draining soil is best. Although most species are adaptable to any number of climates, clematis prefers areas with cold winters or a coastal effect. Clematis needs its roots to remain cool and shaded while its stems, branches and leaves need sun. If this isn’t possible, cover the root area with mulch to help regulate the temperature.

Removal

  1. Many of the common clematis pests are easily removed by a strong spray of water or by clipping off heavily infested leaves. This is particularly the case with scales, aphids, thrips and whiteflies. Pruning away heavily infested branches can prevent the pests from spreading to other parts of your clematis or, worse, throughout your yard. Picking off foliage-feeding caterpillars can also stop small populations from stripping the clematis of its leaves.

Natural Control Methods

  1. Natural predators are sometimes your best defense against pest populations on a prized clematis. Parasitic wasps, ladybugs and lacewings eat the smaller pests. Spray the clematis thoroughly with a ready-to-use insecticidal soap or neem oil, making sure you coat all leaf surfaces, if you can’t control the pests with other methods.

Insecticide For Clematis

The clematis is a beautiful flowering plant that can be grown as a vine or a shrub. It has large, lush flowers that come in an array of colors and blooms from May to September. It grows best in USDA zones 4 through 8, and it prefers full sun to partial shade. The clematis is susceptible to many pests, including insects.

Aphids are small greenish-black insects that suck sap from the leaves of the clematis. They can do serious damage if left unchecked, so it’s important that you check for aphids on your clematis regularly and treat them before they have time to multiply and cause more damage.

Aphid control starts with monitoring the plants for signs of infestation. If you see small greenish-black insects on your plants, then you know you have aphids and should start treatment immediately. To control the problem at its source, spray the entire plant with insecticide twice per week until all signs of infestation are gone (usually about two weeks).
