Japanese Cockroaches – Blattella japonica

Japanese Cockroaches, or “Japonica” roaches, are the most invasive type of cockroach in the United States. They have been known to rapidly invade households all over the country.

There are over 3,500 known species of cockroaches, but only a handful that share the infamy of being pests in people’s homes. The most famous is the German roach, yet another species in the list that can also be seen commonly throughout America (it would appear as if I have a vendetta). Yet another variation is what I like to call the Japanese cockroach, Blattella japonica. This particular type of roach has become well known in recent years, popping up in urban areas across North America and abroad.

Did you know that of the four “true” species of cockroach, only one (Blattella asahinai) is native to Japan? More than half of all known roach species are considered as pests (as they are in the US and Australia, for example), and the rest are generally regarded as invaders and are controlled by legislation. But not just in Japan! In fact, most of these invasive species were introduced, either accidentally or deliberately, sometime after the middle of the nineteenth century.

Cockroaches are just not scary––they are big, they are ugly, they have a creepy dark brown color and they carry diseases. A lot of people hate them. But in Japan, they are pets and there are even cockroach-racing contests held in some parts of the country.
