Killing ants with grits is what we used to do back in my day. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some people that use this method. You see, things like Raid just don’t work very well. It’s too easy for the ants to just grab some of the Raid and walk away as a shield against the other ones. But grits – that’s something else entirely. I had an infestation of sugar ants in my basement. They would carry off sugar, bread crumbs, and other sweet substances, and take them back to their nest for food. I didn’t want to poison the ants because I have a pet dog who likes to snack on penny candy.  So I poured cornmeal around the perimeter of the house where I could see them coming in (under a set of stairs). The ants ate it up as fast as I could pour it down. The next day they were carrying away cornmeal. So very satisfying! By day three they had stopped coming in; they either moved to a different area or went back home.
