King Ants

The story of the king ants follows two ants, who are very important in their ant community.

I remember sitting in a large open arena-like structure that was at least three stories high. I was a young girl and could only see the ground floor, but there seemed to be an endless number of ants on the ground level. The bottom floor of the structure had countless King Ants walking around the ground floor. These King Ants didn’t seem to listen or respect any of the workers (me and other children) who were called down to do their bidding.

Ants are a remarkable species – there are 10,000 known individual species (insects and their kin) and they live in literally every region on Earth except the polar regions, the highest mountains, and some exceedingly dry deserts. If you think about the scale of this achievement it is fairly incredible

King Ants are quite possibly the best ants you’ll ever meet. I say this because they never stop working; they bring food back to the colony while it is still alive and they meticulously organize their whole society into a complex set of jobs. Here’s some King Ant facts:

Honeypot ants (Myrmecia pilosula) are a living example of how to defend an antimaterialist position in an ant colony. They are quite well-known throughout Australia. Honeypot ants can defend their colony with their formic acid-based poison.
