Did you know that the Harvester Ants are the only ants living in the desert? They have a amazing defense system and to know it, you must have a closer look at this Black & White Ant.

Nick Sagar, a fifth grade student and citizen scientist at the Black Hantavirus Field Lab in New Mexico, spotted some real live harvester ants in his backyard. He started collecting them and studying them to see what he could find out about them. When he looked at their feet he found something impressive – a pair of tiny hook-like claws. After carefully studying these claws he discovered that they were actually used for cutting food! The claws on these ants were hooked, like lobster “hands” or scissors.

Live Harvester Ants are highly abundant insects found in North America. They also happen to be one of my favorite animals. In this article I’ll be touching on their biology, natural history, and how to get rid of them if you do have a problem.

If you try to kill a live harvester ant mounds, you can never get rid of the ant colony. With enough patience, you may be able to wait long enough for the ants to move on, but more likely than not, they will just find somewhere else to start a new colony.
