Flea bites can be extremely irritating for both you and your dog (cats can also get fleas). If you have been bitten by an animal that might have fleas, you need to take the necessary precautions to keep from getting an infestation in your home. Fleas are tiny insects that go onto the host and will bite any part of their body.  If you have fleas in your home, it can be a major challenge to eradicate an infestation. Not only do these pests bite, leaving your kittens susceptible to the risk of several dangerous diseases, but they can also cause allergic reactions on those who are sensitive. Fleas in the home should be an easy situation to deal with, but many times the problem persists because people don’t take the necessary precautions or use the proper products.

By mixing lemon juice, basil and peppermint essential oil into a spray bottle, you can kill fleas on your pet and in your home.

To make the spray:

• Fill the spray bottle 3/4 full with water.
• Add 10 drops of lemon essential oil to the water. The lemon contains citric acid, which will help kill off fleas on contact by dissolving their exoskeletons.
• Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to the water. The minty smell is an added bonus that will help mask any odors from dead fleas!

Ingredients

The first step to removing fleas is to make sure that you have the right ingredients on hand. When it comes to killing fleas on your pet, you don’t want to hurt them or use harsh chemicals that could cause irritation. You’ll need:

• 1/4 cup of baking soda
• 1 cup of liquid castile soap
• 2 cups of white vinegar (you can also use apple cider vinegar)

1 cup liquid Castile soap

• Castile soap is a vegetable-oil-based soap that is made free of animal fats and synthetic ingredients. It’s biodegradable and non-toxic, making it safe for pets. Castile soap can be found in liquid or bar form at most grocery stores or health food stores.
• Add one cup of castile soap to 8 ounces of water in a spray bottle and shake well before using on your dog or cat. Spray all over the animal’s fur, making sure you get underneath as well as on top of their coat. Let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water.[1]

1 cup white vinegar

Vinegar is a great natural flea killer. It can be used in three different ways:

1 cup vinegar – Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water, and pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle. Spray the solution on your dog or cat, then wait 30 minutes before you rinse them off with warm water.

2 cups apple cider vinegar – Mix two cups of apple cider vinegar with one gallon of water, and pour into a clean bucket or large bowl for soaking your pet’s bedding or toys (you can also use this mix to clean your pet’s bedding). Let the items soak overnight before washing as normal.

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar – Add 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar to a quart (32 oz.) spray bottle filled with warm water; shake well before each use to mix in any sediment at the bottom of the bottle (this step is optional). Shake again just before spraying each area where fleas are present; be sure that you don’t get any liquid on your furniture because it may leave permanent stains behind!

4 tbsp baking soda

Baking soda is a natural flea repellent, and it’s probably already in your pantry. If you haven’t already done so, toss out any area rugs and vacuum everything in the house thoroughly to remove fleas from all corners of your home. Sprinkle baking soda on carpets and other areas where fleas may live; leave it undisturbed until it dries, then vacuum up the powder.

Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and can be used to clean many things around the house:

• Use baking soda mixed with water to scrub tile grout clean or remove bad smells from drains
• Soak shoes in a bathtub filled with warm water mixed with 2 tbsp of baking soda before washing them (this will help freshen them up)

• Water is a natural flea killer. Fleas are found near bodies of water, and they can’t survive long in damp environments. So if you have an infestation, try spraying the inside of your home with a mixture of 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water. Vinegar is also known to repel fleas, so this solution will help kill off those little pests while keeping them away from your house.
• Fleas are notoriously hardy insects, but they’re not immune to nature’s wrath in the form of rain and humidity—the two things that make up our planet’s most abundant element! If you have pets or children who love playing outside, consider keeping them away from puddles when it starts raining (or even better yet: get out there yourself). Nature provides several other great ways to deal with these pesky pests too!

Natural Flea Killer Method: Mix all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Spray on your pet dog and cat. Also, spray around your house to kill fleas.
