Pavement Ants Wings

Pavement ants with wings, also known as pavement ants, are members of the genus Tachyura. They are found across the world, though they tend to be more common in temperate climates. They are a common pest in homes and gardens.

The workers of this species measure about 1.5 mm long and have a black body with brown legs. The males are slightly smaller than the females and have wings that are shorter than their bodies. The queen has wings that cover her entire body and is usually much larger than other members of her colony.

The workers forage for food during the day, but return to their nest at night or when it begins raining. These ants do not build nests but instead form colonies under objects such as rocks or leaves on lawns or sidewalks, where they raise their young. They will also build nests under boards or bricks in buildings if they find a suitable location within their reachability range (about 5 feet).
