Cankerworms (Alsophila pometaria) are common pests considered major defoliators of hardwood trees. On young leaves, they girdle the midrib, causing brown patches and reducing photosynthesis. Female moths deposit eggs in clusters singly or in groups on the underside of growth. Multiple larvae may consume the entire foliage surface and can cause extensive tree damage. If control measures are not implemented early enough, larvae can kill young trees by late June to early July. Cankerworms are a common pest in the fall. Females can lay between 70 and 80 eggs, and leave a broad trail of damage in their wake. The caterpillars typically feed on leaves from the base up, so that leaves at the top of trees often remain untouched. However, when populations are large, the larvae may feed heavily on leaves even near the top of trees.

When using insecticides on your trees make sure you follow label directions carefully because some products may not be safe for all species of trees.
