Fire ants are social creatures. They live in different nests. Each nest or colony is called “polygyne” and contains one fertile queen, hundreds of fertile male workers, a few hundred thousand sterile female workers and many pupae. These colonies are interconnected through underground tunnels of the workers. A single colony can have up to 5 million ants that live inside the nest, feed each other and communicate in pheromones. Fire ants are ants of the genus Solenopsis. The group is known for their potent sting, painful bite and ability to create large mounds in a short time. They can also be red in color or have a darker or even orange exoskeleton. These fire ant species are among the world’s fastest dorsoventrally (i.e. bottom-to-top) moving animals when they feel threatened and adrenaline is released in their bodies.

Fire ants are aggressive, venomous insects that can cause painful stings. They live in mounds of soil built by their colonies. The colony consists of workers, queens, and males. Fire ant colonies can be found in lawns, gardens, yards and parklands. They build hills of soil to create mounds for their nests.

Fire ants are about 1/4 inch long and red or black in color with a dark abdomen (rear portion), hence their name “fire.” They have 6 legs, two antennae and a narrow waist between the thorax (middle part) and abdomen. Their abdomen is divided into two parts: one rearward segment is called the petiole which attaches to the thorax; the other segment is called the gaster which contains their stomachs and digestive organs.

Their stingers are located just below the waist on the gaster. These stinging hairs inject poison into their victims causing pain, swelling and itching at the site of contact with skin.

Fire ants can sting repeatedly without hurting themselves because they have special reflexes that allow them to withdraw quickly after stinging an object such as your hand or foot!

Fire ants are unique in that they are the only ants that live in large, concentrated colonies. These colonies can contain up to 1 million ants, and the workers will cooperate with one another to build hills as large as 30 centimeters tall.

In addition to their large size, fire ants are also characterized by their red color and painful sting. The sting is a result of the ants’ ability to release formic acid into the wound they cause when they bite their victims. This acid is so potent that it can cause blisters on skin that has been stung by multiple fire ants at once.

Fire ant bites are particularly dangerous for people who have allergic reactions to insect stings or bites. In these cases, a single bite can cause anaphylaxis or even death if medical attention is not given immediately after exposure occurs.
