Bed bug look alikes are insects and other arthropod species that resemble bed bugs. Bed bug look alikes include beetles, mites and ticks. Bed bug look-alikes are the most common type of insect mistaken for bed bugs. Their main features are that they are the same size as bed bugs, and they live in close proximity to humans. These insects can be found throughout the world and in many different types of environments.

Some of the most common look-alikes include:

Bat Bugs: Bat bugs look very similar to bedbugs but are brownish-red or tan in color, with a flattened oval shape that’s about 1/4 inch long. They have wings but cannot fly, so they often hop or jump when they move around.

Carpet Beetles: Carpet beetles are flat, oval beetles with four wings that have alternating light and dark bands across them. They feed on dry animal products such as wool or hair. They’re generally between 1/8 and 1/2 inches long.

Mites: Mites are tiny arachnids that often feed on other insects in people’s homes—including bedbugs! They can be found on furniture, clothing, carpets, mattresses, woodwork and more. They’re usually 1/16th of an inch long or smaller, but some species grow larger than others depending on what type of habitat they’re living in.

So when they hunt down their prey, they inject an anesthetic into them with their sharp mouthparts so that their hosts won’t feel the pain of being bitten and will be less likely to react aggressively or try to get away.
