Have you ever stayed at a hotel and woken up with tiny, red bites all over your body? Or worse, woken up to blood stains from scratching at the bites during the night? If you have, there’s a chance you might have been attacked by bed bugs. This is because there seems to be an epidemic in the US of these blood-sucking insects and now a major concern for anyone who stays in hotels or goes on vacation. You live in the big city so you’re used to having cockroaches or mice around. But bedbugs? There’s no such thing, right? In a recent article of TIME magazine they talked about the epidemic and even gave recommendations on how to avoid bed bug bites while traveling! People from all over the world have been plagued by bed bugs. I’ve designed a blog post that will inform you on what to look out for and how to deal with it.

Bed Bug Epidemic

Bed bugs are small, brownish, flattened insects that feed solely on the blood of animals.

Bed bugs are small, brownish, flattened insects that feed solely on the blood of animals. They are about the size of an apple seed (5–7 mm) and can be recognized by their oval, flattened bodies and long antennae. Bed bugs have been found all over the world since ancient times, though they have been infrequent and usually restricted to areas where people lived in close quarters with their livestock.

The name “bed bug” derives from the preferred habitat of Cimex lectularius: warm houses near or inside a bedding material (hence its common name). The first place they were found was in a house in Krakow Poland around 1600 AD during a plague outbreak there when it was reported that families fled into fields to escape them.

Bed bugs do not require any blood meals before they reach maturity, so they can live off their fat reserves for up to a year under favorable conditions; however if starved for more than two weeks adults will die even if they are supplied with food later on.[2] They can survive temperatures ranging from -18°C (-1°F) to 43°C (110°F).[3] Their eggs need only be deposited within 28 days under normal room temperatures for them to hatch.[4]

Despite their name, they do not live on beds.

Bed bugs are not limited to living on beds; they can be found in many places in a hotel room. If a hotel room is infested with bed bugs, it’s likely that you will find them on the mattress or box spring, as well as in the headboard and nightstands (if they exist). They can also be hiding out in plain sight: bed bugs have been known to live inside cable holes and electric sockets, behind walls and under furniture.

If you notice bites from something that itches like crazy but isn’t mosquito-related—especially if multiple people are experiencing similar symptoms—it’s worth looking for signs of an infestation before things get worse. Bedbugs tend to congregate near their host’s head when sleeping at night, so check your pillowcase for any little red stains (blood) or brown smears (bedbug excrement). If you’re dealing with an active infestation of bedbugs at home, don’t panic: there are ways of getting rid of them safely without harming yourself or others around you!

Most reported infestations tend to be in high-end lodging establishments.

In addition to infesting your home, bed bugs are also known to hitchhike in luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding and furniture. Because they can squeeze through the tiniest of spaces (a hole as small as 1/8th of an inch), they’re often able to travel undetected.

One female bed bug is capable of producing up to five eggs a day – so if you have an infestation at home; it’s important that you contact a professional pest control service right away!

While the majority of reported infestations tend to be in high-end lodging establishments such as hotels and motels; this doesn’t mean that anyone is safe from these nasty creatures!

They also like to travel. They will hitchhike in luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding and furniture. They are also very prolific with one female capable of producing up to 5 eggs a day.

To help prevent an infestation:

  • Use Caution when purchasing used items (furniture) from second hand stores or friends/family who may have brought some items over from their travels
  • Don’t leave any large bags near where you sleep (luggage) as they can easily get into these places.

The bites usually look red and swollen with a dark red center. A bite may have a pus pocket or form a blister. They usually occur in rows or clusters and the reaction time can vary from minutes to days causing severe itching that may last for several days or weeks.

Although it’s unlikely you’ll see one, if you notice any signs of their presence call an exterminator immediately.

The good news is, although bed bugs are a nuisance, they’re not known to spread disease. In fact, many people who are bitten by a bed bug don’t even know it—the bites often look like mosquito or bug bites and can be easily mistaken for something else. The bad news? If you want to get rid of them once and for all, only an exterminator can do that. Bed bugs are not just found in bedrooms; they can be anywhere from movie theaters to public transportation systems to office buildings—and if you think this doesn’t affect you because you’re not poor or live in a shelter…think again! Bed bugs don’t discriminate based on income levels—anyone can become their victim. And if one person in your home has an allergic reaction when bitten by bedbugs (which happens more often than one might think), the entire family will have trouble sleeping at night until proper pest control measures are taken.
