The Zika virus, a mosquito-borne disease that is spreading rapidly throughout the Western hemisphere,  has prompted state health officials in Florida to direct pesticide applicators to kill native mosquito populations in residential areas. In Miami-Dade County — which has nine public cases of the Zika virus, including one pregnant woman and one non-pregnant patient who have tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness — inspectors will have to conduct daily visits of properties, located near the Wynwood neighborhood, where active transmission has been reported. This latest action comes on the heels of Governor Rick Scott’s announcement yesterday that he signed a State of Emergency over the outbreak of mosquito transmitted Zika virus in Miami-Dade County. Zika is an infectious virus of mosquitoes. The virus was recently identified as a major public health threat by WHO, as it has been linked to major birth defects (congenital Zika syndrome) and neurological disorders (Guillain–Barré syndrome). More than 30 countries have active endemic transmission of Zika virus.

The best way to prevent Zika is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. But as we all know, this is easier said than done. For those who find themselves spending time outside at risk of being bitten by mosquitoes, there are several options available to protect yourself from Zika.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved two insect repellents for use against mosquitoes: DEET and picaridin. The EPA also recommends limiting your exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long pants and sleeves when possible during peak mosquito season, avoiding peak mosquito times (dusk and dawn), using air conditioning when possible, keeping windows closed at night and using screens on windows or doors if open.

The Zika virus is an RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family. It is transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes, which are prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. The virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1947, but has since spread to other countries.

The Zika virus can cause mild symptoms in some people, but when it spreads to pregnant women, it can affect their unborn children. The most common symptoms include fever, rash and joint pain. In rare cases, the infection can lead to microcephaly—a condition where babies are born with an abnormally small head and brain damage.

There is no vaccine for the Zika virus yet, but there are ways you can protect yourself from getting infected: by wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors; using insect repellent on clothing or skin; and staying indoors during peak mosquito hours (dawn/dusk).
